Welcome to the course site for Macaulay Honors College Seminar 4, “Planning the Future of New York,” with Prof. Gaston Alonso. On this site, you can access the syllabus<\/a> and readings<\/a>, as well as the class Zoom link and TLC support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our seminar will focus on understanding the political, economic, and cultural causes and effects of contemporary gentrification processes in New York City. The first part of the course will ask students to imagine both what kind of city they want to inhabit and whom they imagine should shape that city. To inform this process, we will compare the \u201cCorporate City\u201d associated with Robert Moses\u2019s post-WWII vision, the \u201cUrban Village\u201d associated with Jane Jacobs\u2019s 1960s vision, and the contemporary \u201cNeoliberal City.\u201d The second part of the course will focus on case studies of specific New York City neighborhoods. Through these case studies, we will explore contemporary gentrification processes. During the last part of the course, students will present on their plans for the future of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
