I don’t recall watching many Operas in my lifetime, or any even, so this was a fairly new experience for me. This one in particular was a recreation of Cinderella, and the original was composed by Gioachino Rossini in the 1800s.

At the Beginning, we were introduced to three of the main characters, Cinderella and her two sisters. Judging by the way they were dressed and how they acted, it was easy to tell who was Cinderella and who was one of her siblings. I was quickly reminded that in Opera, the performers don’t use English words, they sing/yell in a different language, which was what everybody was doing. I was a bit surprised at first, but honestly I thought it was impressive, seeing how well they managed to sing out loud without messing up.

Later on, we would be introduced to new characters, such as the mother, the Prince with his personal driver, and even the fairy godmother who was also the person that was narrating what was going on between scenes. We learn that in the story, the three girls all wish to go to the ball with the prince, but Cinderella can’t go because she is just a maid in everyone’s eyes, and didn’t even have a nice dress. That was until her fairy Godmother gave her one, and she showed up to the ball, immediately gaining the attention of the Prince. The ending then came along, with Cinderella and the prince getting married, and everyone gets along, a fairytale ending for a fairytale story.

Honestly, I hadn’t even watched the movie Cinderella or known much about it, so watching this Opera even taught me what the story was. I actually ended up learning something from this, which was pretty nice.

Overall, I actually enjoyed this event quite a bit. The way that the performers sung and danced on stage, it almost looked like it was animated. Every single person there had very talented voices, being able to sing at different highs and lows without slipping up. Learning about Opera in class is one thing, but going to watch one in person certainly is far more different. I’m sure this won’t be the last one I ever see either.

On Saturday November 22nd, I went to Lefrak Concert Hall to see the Opera performance “La Cenerentola”.
