The first earthquake occurred near Gaziantep, close to the Turkish-Syrian border. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-2023-turkey-syria-earthquake-government-recep-tayyip-erdogan-8ce37276b676db5d011dd52e4de8cd0d\">two<\/a> people have been successfully rescued this week.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the quakes rippled throughout the country on February 6th, the international community has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/turkey-syria-earthquake-which-countries-have-offered-to-help-and-what-aid-are-they-providing-12805055\">sent<\/a> several rescue teams to help assist the Turkish rescue efforts. The UK, US, Italy, France, Israel, Austria, Poland, Greece, South Korea and many other countries sent engineers, firefighters, dogs, and medical specialists. Syria has also received support from the international community.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Turkey on Sunday to tour the damage. After his helicopter tour surveying the damage, Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/19\/1158223049\/blinken-turkey-earthquake-pledges-100-million-us-aid\">said<\/a>, &#8220;When you see the extent of the damage, the number of buildings, the number of apartments, the number of homes that have been destroyed, it&#8217;s going to take a massive effort to rebuild.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/19\/1158223049\/blinken-turkey-earthquake-pledges-100-million-us-aid\">promised<\/a> $100 million in aid on top of the $85 million that President Biden has already announced.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/19\/business\/turkey-earthquake-economy-erdogan.html\">New York Times<\/a>, \u201cReconstruction is expected to cost $10 billion to $50 billion,\u201d although the times noted that the Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation estimated the damage at <a href=\"https:\/\/turkonfed.org\/Files\/ContentFile\/turkonfed2023kahramanmarasearthquakepre-assessmentstatusreport021223-9583.pdf\">$85 billion<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Turkey was in a logistical mess, having to bury tens of thousands of dead in a span of a few days. According to the LA Times, the country was forced to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2023-02-09\/mass-burials-in-turkey-in-the-wake-of-the-earthquake\">mass graves<\/a> to keep up with the number of bodies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The deaths even reached New York City. While visiting family, one New York family of four died beneath rubble in Elbistan, southern Turkey. A mosque in Sunnyside, Queens, held a memorial service for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/final-farewell-for-nyc-family-killed-in-turkey-earthquake\/4099227\/\">family<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The country is struggling to rebuild, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/20\/world\/middleeast\/earthquake-turkey.html\">another<\/a> earthquake with a 6.3 magnitude ripped through the country two weeks after the first set.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, Turkey experienced two major earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5, respectively.&nbsp; The earthquakes have been estimated to have killed 45,000 people.
