{"id":10357,"date":"2024-11-10T18:32:59","date_gmt":"2024-11-10T23:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu\/messenger\/?p=10357"},"modified":"2024-11-10T18:32:59","modified_gmt":"2024-11-10T23:32:59","slug":"flow-the-key-to-student-productivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.macaulay.cuny.edu\/messenger\/2024\/11\/10\/flow-the-key-to-student-productivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Flow: The Key to Student Productivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>by Elaine Huan<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019ve ever found yourself so engaged in something that your self-consciousness fades and you lose track of time, you\u2019ve felt what it\u2019s like to be immersed in the flow state. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.uchicago.edu\/story\/mihaly-csikszentmihalyi-pioneering-psychologist-and-father-flow-1934-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, flow refers to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/flow-state#effects-on-brain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">complete mental focus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that often leads to more efficient, higher-quality work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/digital-learning\/article\/2019\/07\/10\/survey-shows-nearly-half-students-distracted-technology\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital distractions everywhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, maintaining flow is more challenging than ever.\u00a0 Students find themselves planning productive work sessions, only to spend hours scrolling and texting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/21\/technology\/21brain.html?register=email&amp;auth=register-email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interview with the New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 14-year-old Allison Miller attributed her middling grades to her habit of multitasking: \u201cI\u2019ll be reading a book for homework and I\u2019ll get a text message and pause my reading and put down the book, pick up the phone to reply to the text message, and then 20 minutes later realize, \u2018Oh, I forgot to do my homework.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who work in the flow state more often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10657807\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">experience better academic performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Learning to utilize it stands to benefit students\u2019 time management and grades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an effort to better understand flow, researchers have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/flow-state#effects-on-brain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">proposed two main theories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: the transient hypofrontality hypothesis, which says that flow increases focus by reducing self-consciousness, and the synchronization theory, which says that enhanced communication across brain regions is to credit. Setting clear goals is a good start: they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7551835\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">associated with flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> because they lay out a challenge level that matches the capability of the student. Reducing digital distractions is crucial. Flow is a state achieved when doing a single task, not multiple &#8211; students should mute their notifications and ask family or roommates to respect their space in order to avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/flow-state#characteristics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">frustration caused by breaking the immersion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of flow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Intrinsically motivated students, who are encouraged by internal reasons like enjoyment and creativity, have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7551835\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">easier time getting into flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with the respective task. To take advantage of this, focus on the connections your values and interests have to what you\u2019re doing. You can look for inspiration in a historical figure\u2019s life and use their story to improve your own. Writing those emails may strengthen professional connections with others, leading to opportunities for yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This mnemonic can help you remember how to achieve complete focus:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">F &#8211; Focus On One Task<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">L &#8211; Like What You Do<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O &#8211; Omit Distractions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">W &#8211; Write Clear Goals<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Getting into flow seems daunting, but it only is when one isn\u2019t already in the state.
