{"id":9721,"date":"2021-11-08T16:05:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T21:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.macaulay.cuny.edu\/messenger\/?p=9721"},"modified":"2026-02-06T14:45:37","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T19:45:37","slug":"macaulay-and-honors-program-students-at-john-jay-see-the-new-york-philharmonic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openlab.macaulay.cuny.edu\/messenger\/2021\/11\/08\/macaulay-and-honors-program-students-at-john-jay-see-the-new-york-philharmonic\/","title":{"rendered":"Macaulay and Honors Program Students at John Jay See the New York Philharmonic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students in the Macaulay Honors College and Honors Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice saw \u201cAn American Triptych: Mazzoli, Davis, and Adams\u201d at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, Oct. 22.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The highlight of the evening was a clarinet concerto written by Black composer Anthony Davis entitled, \u201cYou Have the Right To Remain Silent.\u201d Davis won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera, \u201cThe Central Park Five.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou Have the Right to Remain Silent\u201d is based upon Davis\u2019 own experience with the police during a traffic stop in Boston in the mid-1970s. The concerto consists of four movements: \u201cInterrogation,\u201d \u201cLoss,\u201d \u201cIncarceration\u201d and \u201cDance of the Other.\u201d The sound of the clarinet, contra-alto clarinet and synthesizer penetrated the walls of the auditorium. Many members of the audience likened the dissonant, yet beautiful, sharp notes of the contra-alto clarinet solo to that of a person crying. On Friday, Oct. 15, students attended a panel discussion entitled \u201cHow Arts Organizations Speak Up for Justice,\u201d with Davis, McGill and formerly incarcerated poet Ian Manuel being featured as guest speakers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Manuel, who was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 13, discussed how poetry helped him through solitary confinement, and why the arts are crucial for advocacy within the criminal justice system. Recently, he published a book entitled \u201cMy Time Will Come: A Memoir of Crime, Punishment, Hope, and Redemption.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John Jay President Karol Mason, who also attended the performance, said she learned so much after hearing students reflect on what they felt the performance accomplished.
