These courses are offered at Queens College, with additional cross-campus sections of Seminars 2, 3, and 4 available at the Macaulay campus in Manhattan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Failing a Macaulay Seminar may result in dismissal from the program.<\/strong> If you are having difficulty in any seminar, reach out to your advisor as early as possible for support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"hcredits\"><\/a><br>3. There are many kinds of courses that meet this requirement:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any course at Queens College with an \u201cH\u201d designation (e.g., CMLIT 101H)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HNRS courses numbered 300 or above (e.g., HNRS 335)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upper-level Macaulay Honors College (MHC) courses offered at the Macaulay campus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Queens College Honors Minor programs <em data-start=\"77\" data-end=\"102\">(see below for details)<\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any course with the subject HTH<br>Note: If both HTH 101 and HTH 102 were taken pre-college, they count as CMLIT 101H for 3 honors credits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any course with the subject code <strong data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"305\">HMNS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any course with the subject code <strong data-start=\"343\" data-end=\"350\">HSS<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of the <strong data-start=\"373\" data-end=\"394\">BALA Honors Minor<\/strong> <em data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"470\" data-is-last-node=\"\">(individual BALA courses do not count unless the full minor is completed)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduate-level courses\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Usually numbered 500 or higher at QC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May be taken with special permission from the academic department offering the class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senior Colloquium or Seminar courses offered by academic departments\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Usually numbered beginning with 391 (e.g., CSCI 3913)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HNRS 1010 &#8211; Honors First Year Seminar (1cr) (not currently offered)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COOP 2011 &#8211; The World of Work (1cr) &#8211; <strong>Honors credits only apply to sections taken in Spring 2024 or earlier&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openlab.macaulay.cuny.edu\/mhc-qc-advisors\/honors-courses\/\"><strong>See the full list of approved Honors courses from QC academic departments here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.28571rem\">Queens College Honors Minors<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can complete your 12 honors credits by completing one of four interdisciplinary, prestigious, and stimulating QC Honors Minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/honorsinthehumanities.com\/\">Honors in the Humanities (HTH)<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/hmns\/\">Honors in Mathematics and Natural Sciences (HMNS)<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/hss\/\">Honors in the Social Sciences (HSS)<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/bala\/\">Business and Liberal Arts (BALA)<\/a> &#8211; Courses from the BALA minor only count for Macaulay Honors if the entire minor is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a id=\"cs\"><\/a><br>4. Community Service<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Macaulay students must complete&nbsp;<strong>30 hours&nbsp;<\/strong>of non-compensated service to our communities, <strong>10 hours per academic year&nbsp;<\/strong>in the first 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Community Service Verification Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find an activity that meets Macaulay <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/student-life\/community-service\/community-service-requirements-and-policies\/\">requirements<\/a>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Activities can be in person or <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/student-life\/community-service\/finding-a-service-opportunity\/\">virtual.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No compensation, whether financial, academic credit, nor meeting pre-professional requirements (no shadowing a physician as a pre-med student, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No religious service, instruction, nor proselytizing &#8211; other community service via a faith-based organization is ok.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No political campaigning &#8211; though advocacy or community service sponsored by a political official is ok.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are unsure if your service will fulfill the requirement, be sure to reach out to your advisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/student-life\/community-service\/reporting-community-service-hours\/\">Reporting Community Service hours<\/a> through Club Macaulay.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding a Community Service Activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1S3ZXma0TtnQ9qgO_HPWL4-ZcA5D-kcSMtSx4Zvh1H5A\/edit?usp=sharing\">Community Service Resource List<\/a> maintained by the Macaulay Scholars Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><b>5. Experiential Education<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Satisfy this requirement by completing either a study abroad, internship, or research activity. For the most up to date instructions, forms, and guidance, start at <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/after-macaulay\/career-development\/\">Macaulay Honors College Career Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can access funding for one of these activities via the <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/opportunities\/opportunities-fund\/\">Opportunities Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consult your advisor before pursuing one of these activities to make sure you&#8217;re on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Abroad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A credit-bearing study abroad program will satisfy this requirement, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/sa\/\">Queens College<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/sites\/global\/students\/programs\/programs-search\/\">CUNY<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you participate in in a <em>non-CUNY<\/em> study abroad, be sure to transfer the credits to Queens College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/community.macaulay.cuny.edu\/forms\/study-abroad-evaluation\/\">Study Abroad Evaluation<\/a> form to count your activity with Macaulay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\">Internship and Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An internship or research assistant-ship consisting of 100 hours or more will also satisfy the Experiential Education requirement. Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/after-macaulay\/career-development\/\">Macaulay Career Development<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/cei\/\">QC Center for Career Engagement and Internships<\/a> for questions or help finding an activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Internship Learning Agreement<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Internship Learning Agreement (ILA) is a contract between you, the research or internship supervisor, and Macaulay. It primarily guarantees your experience will be substantive, educational, and meets professional guidelines. It&#8217;s also how Macaulay keeps track of your completion of the requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/macaulay.cuny.edu\/docs\/ILA_handbook.pdf\">ILA Student Handbook<\/a> for how to start an activity and complete the requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Submit your ILA no later than two weeks from the start date of your internship. Early submission is strongly encouraged. Submitting early helps ensure approval and avoids delays in meeting requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an overview of how the requirement is completed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once you have agreed to an internship or research assistant-ship, create a Handshake account (unless you already have one): <a href=\"https:\/\/mhc.joinhandshake.com\/\">https:\/\/mhc.joinhandshake.com\/&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the steps in the ILA Student Handbook (above) to create a new Internship Learning Agreement, entering all relevant details about the activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333333\" data-darkreader-inline-color=\"\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">TIP<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><br><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><i data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Many students have their ILAs delayed because their <\/i><b><i>Learning Objectives<\/i><\/b><i>&nbsp;are too brief or vague. This section is your opportunity to define what you want to learn and achieve through your research or internship experience. You&#8217;ll be notified via email from Handshake when the approvals are complete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take part in your activity!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the end of the time frame you&#8217;ve indicated in the ILA, you&#8217;ll be prompted once more to complete the <strong>Evaluation&nbsp;<\/strong>for your activity. When this is complete, Macaulay will record that you&#8217;ve met this requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><b><a id=\"thesis\"><\/a><br>6. Honors Thesis or Capstone<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The final Macaulay Honors College requirement is the completion of a thesis, conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor from the student\u2019s major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, students may fulfill this graduation requirement by successfully completing a capstone course that includes a culminating capstone project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few ways to meet this requirement. For social science or humanities majors, it may be a long-form paper, usually 25-50 pages. STEM students can often complete a research project and lab report. Arts students may complete a recital, theatrical performance, or gallery show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, students in music, the thesis\/project may take the form of a recital or an original composition; in Studio Art, it could be a portfolio. Submissions in these cases include the thesis project and a 5-10 page reflection paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declaring your Thesis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re reading this long before your junior or senior year, <strong>it&#8217;s not too early to begin thinking about your thesis<\/strong>. Here are a few things to keep in mind about the thesis from the start of your first year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of your current professors may one day be your thesis mentor, working with you independently. Make a good impression by asking thoughtful questions, attending their office hours, or even volunteering to work with them on their research if it interests you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can look for your professors&#8217; research interests on their faculty bios by searching the QC website. Try networking with a professor whose interests aligns with yours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider your goals beyond you bachelors degree. If you want to attend a particular graduate program, what kind of work will they require? What kind of project may prepare you for a field of work?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first semester of your <strong>junior year,&nbsp;<\/strong>you&#8217;ll be asked to declare your thesis.
