However, over time, it has become a part of our weekly routine. Kim’s Island has become an extension of our communal space.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="512" height="512" src="https://openlab.macaulay.cuny.edu/nyfoodatlas/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2026/04/IMG_8183.jpeg" alt="Kim's Island Chinese Restaurant. After going in there countless times, the staff recognizes us, the menu never drastically changes, and the atmosphere is predictable in the best way. In New York City, a city known for always being in a rush, small businesses like this provide stability. Such consistent establishments form the foundation of our neighborhoods.

Additionally, Kim’s Island Chinese Restaurant reflects stories of immigrant entrepreneurship that make up most of the food landscape in New York City. Kim’s Island is most likely family-run, shaped by long hours, and a mix of traditional and Americanized dishes, like having BBQ wings and General Tso’s Chicken on the same menu. Its presence in our community goes to show that such businesses contribute practically to our city, providing food, but also socially, by exposing others to different cultures.

Overall, Kim’s Island proves to be meaningful as it has become a cross between a location, a community, and a culture. From an affordable restaurant to a shared home base, this restaurant reflects an aspect of the immigrant scene in New York City. This further proves that in New York City, societies are built on many things, but among the most important, the neighborhood restaurant around the corner.

175 Main Street, Staten Island, NY, 10307

By Karen Yacoub
New York City Chinese Restaurants- the menu is familiar but the meaning runs much deeper.
Campus: College of Staten Island
Professor: Jane Marcus-Delgado
Location: 175 Main Street, Staten Island, NY, 10307
References:

2021. “Kim’s Island Chinese Restaurant, Staten Island, NY 10307, Online Order, Take Out.” Kimsislandsi.com. 2021. http://kimsislandsi.com/.

‌

.

Kim’s Island Chinese Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; rather, it serves as a social anchor for my church community that reflects the patterns of neighborhood life in New York City.
