In this course we will explore the nature of science by learning and practicing the skills that scientists use to do their work. We will investigate many different fields of science, from astronomy to botany to genetics and many more!

During this first unit, I would like you to get to know how this course is laid out and where all the important resources are. Every unit will be set up like this one with a list of learning objectives, tasks you should complete, the required readings/videos, assignments, and the self assessment forms. This is a hybrid class and this site is part of our classroom, so it is very important that you familiarize yourself with its structure and hold yourself to regularly visiting the site and completing your tasks.

Unit 1 (and 3) will have a philosophy of science focus to set us up for the rest of the semester. In our Philosophy of Science unit, we will start exploring the nature of science. How is it defined? Is this definition flexible? We will discuss how our understanding of science has changed and compare the way scientists communicate their results with the way those results are then reported to the pubic. This activity directly relates to what you will have to do for your News Essay.

Unit 1 Learning Objectives:

understand the structure of this course and the tools we will be using

know where all the resources are on the course site

get to know your classmates

start to think about the intersection of science and ethics

describe a workable definition of science

identify places to find reliable scientific information

describe how scientists communicate results

evaluate scientific claims in newspaper articles

Unit 1, Class 1 [day/date] Required Readings/Videos:

Course Syllabus: [link]

SF video: The Science Senses (we’re going to watch this one in class)

Reading: The University of California Museum of Paleontology, and the Regents of the University of California. 2017. “Nature of Science” chapter in Understanding Evolution (There are 7 pages to click through).

NOTE: Because this is the first day I don’t expect you do read/watch these before class.
