The iconic yellow <\/span>taxi cab<\/span> has become a symbol of New York City\u2019s culture and identity.<\/span> The emergence <\/span>of NYC\u2019S yellow <\/span>taxi cab<\/span> system not only <\/span>revolutionized<\/span> urban transportation and commuting, <\/span>but also <\/span>became a <\/span>popularized<\/span> symbol of NYC\u2019s culture, as seen in various media sources <\/span>including<\/span> movie scenes. <\/span>Today, the yellow <\/span>taxi cab<\/span> truly <\/span>represents<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>NYC\u2019s dedication to finding innovative solutions through technological advancement.<\/span>\u00a0Electrified taxis, such as hybrid and fully electric models, make up <\/span>a significant portion<\/span> of the fleet, using cleaner energy systems that <\/span>minimize<\/span> pollution and negative environmental impacts.<\/span> In addition, with the recent <\/span>accomplishment of<\/span> having accessible yellow cabs make up<\/span> half of <\/span>the total active fleet<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>NYC is setting a new standard for inclusive urban transportation.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nHow did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This project, which focused on the iconic yellow cabs of NYC, allowed for an exploration of how these taxis serve as a moving icon and a form of visual and cultural art within New York City. Our project highlighted the role of these taxis in shaping the visual landscape and narrative identity of the city by highlighting their presence in historical as well as contemporary film and media. By including aspects such as clean energy, accessibility, and driver accounts, we can see that the taxi is not merely a form of transportation. It is also central to the daily lives, labor, and societal values of New Yorkers, placing it as an effectively community-rooted urban art.<\/p>\n
