The main goal of the zine is to introduce people to his life, ideas and artwork as a Surrealist artist. The zine format allows the artwork and my text to complement each other in a manner similar to Magritte\u2019s mixed use of words and images. I specifically focused on <em>The Treachery of Images <\/em>and <em>The Son of Man<\/em> through which readers can get an understanding of how to approach Magritte\u2019s artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Magritte\u2019s paintings are often saturated with multiple layers of meaning. Even paintings that appear simple, such as a pipe on a plain, uniform background, are intended to challenge the viewers\u2019 ideas about truth and reality. As a surrealist, Magritte was not bound by a need to conform his work to the reality of the world around him. Surrealism challenges the viewer to think about reality as a fa\u00e7ade. In simplistic terms, do not always believe what you see. This idea mirrors NYC. There are deeper levels behind the fa\u00e7ade of the world\u2019s greatest city image that is presented. It is one city, but in fact, if you look deeper, it is a collection of people and cultures. There are stunningly pristine and beautiful parts of the city that mask problems below the surface. On the other hand, there are more impoverished and seemingly gloomy parts of the city that just under the surface reveal vibrant and flourishing cultures.
