By being straightforward with a museum-like presentation, we hope that the one page-to-page format will consolidate our intentions to gain appreciation of street art as a whole. We acknowledge the fact that upon first impressions of street art, people generally come to the conclusion that they fall under vandalism, thus disrespecting the art community with its infamy. Even without this stereotype, many individuals residing in the city are either oblivious or ignorant of these arts in front of them, merely passerby to be frank. However, upon exposure to various mediums of street art from our seminar course and peers to the behind-the-scenes of these creations, there was appreciation and respect as a result.

Street art, like the other forms of art, is an expression from the body that not only is prevalent within New York City, but also personal to local communities. Works such as graffiti and murals to individuals such as Banksy truly captures the essence of our city’s neighborhoods. Even through different lenses in producing these pieces, it highlights the unique nature of our diverse culture.

Graffiti and street art can be found in many different forms: stencil, collage, sticker art, mosaic, street installations, tape art, and more. In our project, we focused on finding and highlighting multiple forms of found street art in Flushing, Elmhurst, and Bushwick — local areas in our community that we encounter. We didn’t Google search for pieces to photograph, but specifically gathered our sources by just keeping our eyes open while going about our day to day lives. This approach has allowed us to explore and get to know the street art in our own communities better. Viewing graffiti intentionally rather than with a dismissive eye revealed to us pieces of art hidden in plain sight.

We hope that with a push from our project, we are able to change the perceptions around street art within our sphere of influence, the Macaulay STEAM community, but also to anyone viewing our work.

View Project

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project has definitely widened our view of New York City art, especially the ones that exist in our neighborhoods but never came to our attention. Such phenomenon can be applied to the general public as there are so many artworks in every corner yet many are not acknowledged. Perhaps the artists don't intend for their pieces to attract anyone in particular but we believe that they deserve to be seen because art is a form of expression. Their dedication to share a message through creative measures allows them to establish an identity for themselves and serve as a guidance for their audience as well. Within a very diverse community, from different cultural backgrounds, it is very important for one to find their place and art is an excellent form of expression of self. Through the process of collecting arts varying in mediums and locations, we realize that art can be seen everywhere and it is not a lost cause, especially when there are constantly new works produced by the second. They are a symbol of preservation of one’s identity, one that can be seen by anyone.

Group Members: Emily Chang, Mark Shrivastava, Eram Yu We decided to configure a zine, or digital portfolio to be exact, to not only showcase the various street arts…

[1029,39,62,67
474,602,1151,657,690,1067
post-2992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1029","category-hong-caroline","category-queens","category-seminar-1-the-arts-in-nyc","tag-graffiti","tag-local","tag-mosaic","tag-murals","tag-nyc","tag-street-art
["GET
