However, graffiti has always been more than just a few words or images sprayed onto some random walls. It&#8217;s become a powerful way for people to express their identities, communities, and political voices. My project follow the evolution of graffiti from its early days in the NYC subways to street art in the Bronx to the legal, protest-based mural movements. After looking at the history, the artists behind the movement, and the messages carried thoughout graffiti, I hope to show how graffiti has shaped the visual and cultural identity of New York City and settle the debate over whether it is art or vandalism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom:20px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/design\/DAG6SXtfJq8\/XUFjy_uKvVcufl4jcAw69w\/view?utm_content=DAG6SXtfJq8&amp;utm_campaign=designshare&amp;utm_medium=link2&amp;utm_source=uniquelinks&amp;utlId=h6d27a5a9b5\">View Project<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom:20px\">\n<strong>How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This project opened my eyes to just how much art shapes daily life in New York. Graffiti is something we all see throughout our day to day lifes, yet no one thinks much about it. But when you sit and pay attention to it, you see that is not just paint on a wall; it\u2019s people claiming space, showing who they are, and telling their stories. I saw how art steps up and speaks out, especially when it comes to social issues. It gives people a way to be heard when they feel invisible.
