It can inspire, advocate, advise, memorialize, describe experiences, and serve countless other purposes. Brooklyn is an incredibly diverse borough, and each neighborhood expresses itself through art in its own unique way. Since each member of our group comes from a different part of Brooklyn, we each created a collage representing the art that has impacted our own communities.

Collectively, our project brings together these perspectives to show the many ways New Yorkers connect to and are shaped by art. Through our work, we hope to encourage our audience to reflect on what art means to them personally and consider whether there is a particular piece of art that they feel especially connected to.

View Project

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing our project helped each of us explore the role of art in the lives of New Yorkers by forcing us to slow down and notice the art in our own neighborhoods. As we walked through our communities, we began paying attention to the graffiti, murals, and decorations that we usually overlooked. We started to recognize how art is intentionally used to influence, inspire, and shape our daily experiences.

Personally, the piece that stood out to me most in my collage was the wall of paintings in a well-known restaurant in my area, Smash House. The vibrant scenery and detailed artwork create an atmosphere that draws customers back, not just for the food but for the atmosphere and experience of the space itself. This showed me how art can directly affect people’s decisions—just one example of how art impacts New Yorkers in their everyday lives.

By having each member of our group create a collage of the art that impacts their neighborhood, we were able to see the broader role art plays across Brooklyn. Because Brooklyn is one of the most diverse boroughs in New York, the differences in our collages highlighted how art is used in many different ways to reflect culture, identity, history, and community. Together, our project helped us understand how deeply art is woven into the lives of New Yorkers and how it shapes the character of each community.

Group Members: Abe Janani, Zara Gingishvili, Evelyn Kofman, Abbigail Fuzaylova, Anna Bodzin, Aiden Krasnopolskiy Art can be utilized for a multitude of reasons.
