Through our research, we found magazines to serve as a meeting point for multiple art forms and aspects of culture, such as fashion design, architecture, digital media, jewelry and pop culture. We looked at jewelry, architectural, fashion, digital, and gossip magazines. Magazines work to shape cultural movements in fashion, modern architectural trends, luxury jewelry brands that are in high demand, digital media that influences viewers and popular culture stories that influence what society discusses and values. All of these editorials work together to create cohesive visual narratives that influence trends and consumer culture. Regardless of the lens you choose to look at, each type of magazine serves as a cultural curator, especially in large cities where trends come and go cyclically. Specifically in New York City, magazines function as cultural indicators.

View Project

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Researching the social impact of magazines helped us to realize the influence of editorials on the behavior of New Yorkers. The diverse atmosphere within New York is renowned; however, it is particularly appreciated for the way these diverse communities intertwine. This interconnectedness is a result of many commonalities, specifically magazines. Through this research, we discovered that magazines can act as a center for various kinds of people, blending those interested in fashion design, architecture, digital creativity, jewelry, and pop culture. Due to the numerous genres, magazines create new communities; it creates communities not based on one's religion or culture, but built on their interests and passion. This outlet of expression demonstrates the creativity and art amongst New Yorkers. This project portrays that the confidence and self-aware identities of New Yorkers is built off of the art forms within magazines.

Group Members: Shivani Hardat, Palak Mehrotra, Zaria Hosein, Anya Pawa, Sylvia Saad For our project we decided to examine magazines through different lenses to see how…

[1029,86,1050,67
179,1229,690,1024
post-3219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1029","category-baruch","category-salois-rebecca","category-seminar-1-the-arts-in-nyc","tag-arts","tag-magazines","tag-nyc","tag-zine
["GET
