I wrote this to shed light on the reality some people face today, as conversion therapy continues to be legal in some states of the U.S. and other parts of the world. This story focuses on the queer experience, conversion therapy, religious trauma, and mental health.

For my prototype of the project, I wrote the ending of my play, as it would be the part of the play that’s most impactful. To include community engagement, I wrote two endings, so the audience could “choose their own path.” I wish to reach two audiences. I want the queer community to feel seen and heard with my script. While not every queer person has gone through conversion therapy, religious trauma and struggles with mental health are not uncommon. I’d also like to reach an audience that has feelings against the queer community or are teetering back and forth. I want them to feel empathy for Soul and realize the effects that their beliefs and opinions can have on others.

View Project

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Working on my project helped me really learn about communities and how art can make an impact on them. Not only that but learning about how to engage the community with art introduced me to approach to art. It was interesting trying to figure out how to engage an audience into a play. Not only can art make people feel seen, especially minorities, but it can help people feel connected with said community.

Group Members: Alexa Escamilla SOUL, is a script that follows the story of a girl called Soul who comes out to her religious parents and gets sent to…

[1029,48,1047,67
168,520,592,628,776
post-3342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1029","category-lehman","category-pace-alethea","category-seminar-1-the-arts-in-nyc","tag-art","tag-identity","tag-lgbtq","tag-mental-health","tag-queer
["GET
