Instead of examining general unemployment, we wanted to identify who is specifically being affected. Has AI been replacing workers outright, or is it just changing the demographics of hiring?

What we found is that since the release of Generative AI (initially ChatGPT in late 2023), there has been a “K-shaped” impact. Essentially, this tool helps experienced workers become even more efficient and renders beginners obsolete in sectors that have adopted AI. To fully confirm this finding, we analyzed labor market data from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, which had tracked 25 million payroll records, along with workforce intelligence reports from Revelio Labs, ILO, and the Federal Reserve. To get a more holistic answer, we conducted interviews with two professors and incorporated their educated opinions on the subject.

AI at the moment is a tool that makes senior positions more valuable via augmentation, which is why we have seen an increase of 7% in their hiring. Entry-level hiring, on the other hand, has crashed by 20% in the same fields, because their “learning tasks” are easily performed by AI with a fraction of the cost and time.

This is the “Broken Ladder,” as companies choose to automate their sandbox tasks to save money. AI is now raising the barrier to entry for the workforce, and new graduates have to quickly adapt to the new definition of an “employable skill.”

View Project

Group Members: Ahmed Radwan, Adam Adler, Catherine Gardella, Esther Adewoyin Everyone seems to be asking the same question: “Will AI take our jobs?” Although it’s a fun thought…

[1029,20,1062,68
1272,358
post-3462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-1029","category-csi","category-liu-charles","category-seminar-3-science-forward","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-economics
["GET
