NYC. Origami. The project was created based on these three aspects. Our goal is to highlight each letter of STEAM while reflecting an everyday New York lifestyle through the use of an artform that was interesting to us — origami!

The ‘S’ and ‘T’ in STEAM represent Science and Technology which we demonstrated by adding electricity in our neighborhood model. This was accomplished with the use of fairy lights to simulate lamp posts. By mapping out the blueprint and using various architectural considerations we incorporated engineering, representing the ‘E’ in STEAM, into the general layout of the neighborhood. In terms of arts, representing the ‘A’ in STEAM, we paid attention to dimension and realism by incorporating textured sheets for roofing and grass, as well as coloring and shading the different elements of the project. Moreover, along with providing utility, the lights also enhance the visuals of the projects. Furthermore, we utilized geometrical shapes and ratios for the housing, stairs, and roads which connect to the ‘M’ in STEAM.

Our goal for this project is to exemplify how art is used in New York neighborhoods and what we see around us everyday. Oftentimes we tend to overlook the different complex components to build a functioning neighborhood that is also visibly appealing. New York is a very diverse place and to represent this diversity we welcomed people to add their own origami pigeon to our project as our final component to completing our New York neighborhood. The importance of this community aspect is that every pigeon would be different in forms and colors, further emphasizing the great diversity in every New York neighborhood.

Overall, this project helped us explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers by encouraging us to look at New York neighborhoods as a piece of art and consider all the work and creativity that goes into building the streets we walk through and live in everyday.

View Project

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Overall, this project helped us explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers by encouraging us to look at New York neighborhoods as a piece of art and consider all the work and creativity that goes into building the streets we walk through and live in everyday.

Group Members: Noshin Orala, Noor Syar, Nabiha Subaita STEAM.
