The 1811 Commissioners' Plan, which regulated and improved the city's infrastructure, included the construction of a massive public water-delivery system completed in 1842 Wealthy households with indoor plumbing and sanitary water, however, still felt the need for additional water purification. While designed for everyday use, this porcelain water filter was expensive due to its material and ornamentation. The dragon crest at the top was inspired by Asian decorative arts, which were prominent at world's fairs
