The main purpose of this proposal is the mitigation of the effects of global warming, and to that end, we will also nee to keep an eye on the causes of global warming and what we can do to mitigate them. Cars are a major producer of global warming emissions so the reduction of car usage is paramount. I suggest implementing an island-wide light rail system to quickly and efficiently move people around the island.
On Staten Island, there has been discussions around implementing light rail systems servicing several areas. In 2020, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) renewed one of their earlier analyses for a West Shore Light Rail, as well as a proposal for a central system utilizing the existing Korean War Veteran’s Parkway. However, to more fully address the issues of global warming, a more complete solution is required.
Building upon the MTA proposals, reddit user TheDogPill made suggested an island-wide solution.
This solution uses the existing MTA suggestions, but extends it to further make use of existing right of ways and medians to service the majority of the island. I believe this is the best approach to take. The only changes to this suggestion that I would make for my proposal, is to ensure that there is direct access to all of my newly created Car Free housing developments, and to put a light rail system running along the front of my new property developments on the reclaimed land on the South Shore.
Now we’ve reviewed the new reclaimed land and its uses and access, it is time to discuss the Housing that will be developed here.
