Need

The earth is warming. the polar icecaps are experiencing unprecedented simultaneous heatwaves. Governments are failing to enact the required constraints to restrict the earth to 1.5 degree in average warmth. In the future more powerful storms, coupled with rising sea waters, will make flooding are more constant threat.

While it may be possible for humanity to restrict the damage if we act decisively and act quickly, pressures from industry and political maneuvering is preventing such action from taking place. As such, it is highly improbable that we will be able to stop the temperature at 2 degrees of increase, let alone the 1.5 mark. As such, it is imperative that we do as much as we can to protect ourselves, given the inevitability of future warming. We can expect the increased warming to melt large portions of both polar ice caps, raising ocean water levels and providing fuel for increased hurricane activity. It is this ocean level rise and increased storm activity that poses the most immediate dangers to New York city. Hurricane Sandy showed just how susceptible to storm surges and rising sea levels New York City, and specifically Staten Island’s South Shore is to these new threats.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy ravaged the east coast of the United States, causing billions of dollars in damage as well as displacing thousands due to flooding. As the world warms, such storms will increase, and so a plan needs to be implemented to reduce the damage these storms cause in the future.

This is the urgent need that my proposal aims to address. You can read this starting on the Land Project page.
