Faculty FAQ

I have a student who cannot attend. What happens if students are absent?

While this event is considered mandatory, there is no Macaulay-level penalty for missing it. We recommend making STEAM attendance a small part of students’ grades. Grading is entirely at the faculty member’s discretion, but some faculty choose to make attendance worth a small fraction (such as 2%) of the overall grade, incorporate it into the project grade, or make it part of a class participation grade. If a student misses their session (or doesn’t sign up at all) faculty designate a makeup assignment that makes the most sense in the context of their own class. One popular makeup activity for students who cannot attend is to spend time looking at the digital STEAM gallery, leaving comments, and writing a reflection to submit to the professor, but we welcome professors to devise what works for the context of their own classes. TLC members can also help with designing a makeup activity.

We discourage students from attending if they are sick. Excused absences are at the discretion of each professor, but faculty may not give blanket exemptions from attendance. If you have a student with particular accessibility needs, please let Lisa Brundage know as soon as possible. The registration form also has a space to enter accessibility needs.

How many students should be in a group? What if the group cannot come up with a time that they can all attend?

We recommend groups of 3-4. Groups should not be larger than 5. Groups should not register for more than one session due to space constraints. If a group cannot come up with a feasible time to attend, we ask that the professor assign a makeup for the student(s) who will be absent. Remember students enter one registration per group.

Can my class attend all together and can I sign my students up?

STEAM is focused on cross-campus an interdisciplinary connections. We prefer to have students mixed by campus and cohort rather than attending as whole classes. If all students from a class sign up for the same session, they will still be mixed in with other campuses and seminars. Professors should allow student groups to sign up independently.

What is the physical set up of the space?

Seminar 3 students will have poster boards or wall space to hang their posters. We provide thumbtacks and tape. Seminar 1 students will be provided with tables where they can place projects, artifacts, and laptops if they have digital materials to show. Seminar 1 students are also allowed to display posters if that is their class project. If your students have a project that needs a different set up, we will do our best, but we need to know by November 18, 2025.

What do students do at STEAM?

The Macaulay TLC Fellows facilitate the event. After setting up in their assigned spaces, the TLC Fellows lead students in a brief warm-up sharing session. Groups should be prepared to deliver a 1-minute elevator pitch summarizing their projects. Students usually spend the first 20-30 minutes in their assigned rooms. After the in-room sharing, students have time to move through the spaces and be in discussion with each other. They have some fun activities they can complete, such as STEAM Bingo. We also have an analog makerspace with button making, collaging, and more!

How do students get posters printed?

Students who need printing will be able to sign up for a printing appointment at the same time as they register. Please remember that we are constrained in how many appointments we can take by the physical speed of the printer. (In other words, appointments for Friday before STEAM fill up first!) Students will take their posters with them after printing, and bring them back with them for their STEAM session. If there are readily available printing services on your own campus, please let students know how to access them! We cannot print during the event. We do not provide funding or reimbursement for printing services.

What is the difference between the STEAM Festival and the online gallery?

Students attend the STEAM Festival and upload their projects to our online gallery. The gallery is available to a public audience and faculty may use it for STEAM-related class activities. It also serves as an archive of the work students do in Seminars 1 and 3, and is used for faculty-led programmatic assessment. Online gallery uploads are open December 1-10, 2025. Gallery uploads are not valid in lieu of event attendance.
