Dream of Arcadia
Robert Seldon Duncanson
1852
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
There is a Greek temple in the back, standing in front of mountains. There’s a river, hinting towards a natural landscape. It’s very much so a painting taken in a moment, very serene and tranquil. The subjects of the painting are doing their leisurely daily activities. It’s held the peaceful of civilization in a Greek paradise. The mountains are very prominent, showing power. It shows all creatures being in harmony with one another.

Virgin of pomata with st.Nicholas Tolentino and St. Rose of Lima
Frank L. Babbot
1700-1750
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
This painting seems to be portraying the rise or blessing of the virgin of Pomata.
What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?
The virgin of Pomata is dressed in jewels and flowers. She is also surrounded by two other saints, St. Nicholas and St. Rose of Lima, as well as angels. Her hair is very long and covered in flowers.
How does this object compare to other objects, stories, or ideas you already know about?
In other religious paintings you can see a halo around the head of a saint or the virgin Mary, however; in this painting there are no halos around the heads of the saints or the virgin of Pomata. The virgin of Pomata is dressed very differently compared to that of the virgin Mary for example, she’s dressed in a more flamboyant style.
What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?
The frame surrounding the painting is bright gold and textured compared to the plain blue wall that it’s placed upon, causing it to pop

The Virgin
Joseph Stella
1926
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
The painting shows a calm and peaceful woman with her eyes closed, almost like she’s meditating or praying. She’s surrounded by bright flowers, fruits, and birds, which makes the scene feel alive and full of nature. It gives a sense of harmony between the woman and the natural world—like she’s a symbol of peace or purity. It might be telling a story about spirituality, nature, or protection.
What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?
The colors are very bright and warm, especially with the yellows, oranges, greens, and blues. The smooth lines and symmetrical composition make everything look balanced and calm. The glowing white circle around her head draws attention to her face and gives a holy or special feeling. The details in the flowers and plants make the painting feel rich and full of life.
How does this object compare to other objects, stories, or ideas you already know about?
This reminds me of religious or spiritual icons, like portraits of saints or holy figures. The halo-like glow around her head looks similar to paintings of the Virgin Mary or other sacred figures. The use of nature also reminds me of how some cultures connect spirituality with the earth and natural beauty.
What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?
The museum placed the painting on a deep blue wall, which makes the bright colors in the artwork stand out more. It’s framed simply but nicely so the focus stays on the painting itself. The lighting highlights the center of the piece, especially her face, which helps guide viewers’ eyes to the most important part of the work.

Vibrant colors, letters, texture and contrast. They help the observer distinguish the elements.
How does this object compare to other objects, stories, or ideas you already know about?
We’ve seen paintings this vibrant but not with the same meaning and letters used in this context. It connects to the black liberation and civil rights movements of the past, which is something we are familiar with from history courses.
