Hello! My name is Joseph Pentangelo and I’m a linguist and folklorist. You can read a little bit about my research and academic work here. I’m also a graduate of Macaulay myself (MHC@CSI 2012), and I’ve been working for Macaulay in one role or another since 2015.
One thing that I’m excited about is this year’s Night at the Museum. This is an annual event where all first-year Macaulay students gather together in a museum after hours to check out the art without any other visitors around. It’s a really unique and enjoyable experience, whether you’re a museum aficionado or very much not. But this is the first time that we’ll be at the Guggenheim, so that’s inherently exciting. The building itself is an architectural treasure, and I personally love a lot of the work on display there – I’m a big fan of Henri Rousseau – and I’m looking forward to sharing this space with you all and getting your impressions.
What I’ll need community support to get through is the series of OpenLab workshops that we have planned for this fall. I want to show you all how to build your own websites here on OpenLab, which is our custom install of WordPress, one of the most widely-used and highly-regarded web development platforms in the world. This means that the skills you learn here are very portable and have practical utility well beyond Macaulay. I want to show you how to build a 2000s-style guestbook on your websites, how to find and deploy ancient gifs, and, most importantly, how to use WordPress’s divisive but excellent block editor to build truly beautiful websites – something many longstanding WordPress devs struggle with, because they hate to learn new things, but which you will excel at, because you like to learn new things, because you are smart and capable and curious.
