Community Impact

The community of Harlem has a history of being neglected. In the past groups such as the Young Lords were created to stand up for the neighborhood of East Harlem which led to many important protests such as the Garbage Offensive and the Church Offensive which impacted the way this community was treated. It is still being underserved today, and with this mapping we aim to demonstrate the resources available to improve the health and well being of the people in the community. This is vital because if this issue continues to be unaddressed then many people will be negatively impacted economically, socially, physically, and mentally. People can only achieve status mobility in society when their health needs are first met and this all starts with what you eat and what your community has to offer you.

We aim to spread awareness about this neighborhood through community outreach with social media and interpersonal connections. By making this website, making videos, and sharing it on social media this can reach a larger audience. Through our interpersonal relationships our group was able to find a fellow university student who works in the Harlem community to share this information with their organization, North Side Center for Child Development, to ensure that people know the resources out there that are available to them.
