With the influx in immigration, and the need for community, the owner Alagappa Alagappan, founded Ganesh Temple with his wife Visalakshi, on Bowne Street in respect to John Bowne, a freedom fighter who upheld the idea of freedom of worship in the area in the 17th century. He was able to unite Hindus of all backgrounds in the area and abroad. The canteen is a cult favorite, bringing everyone together. The Canteen serves vegetarian food, known to be an offering to the deities in the temple, as well as nourishment at a pure level.
