The Macaulay Honors College was established in 2001 as the cross-campus honors college for the City University of New York. Students may be based at any of eight senior colleges, including Baruch College, Brooklyn College, City College, the College of Staten Island, Hunter College, John Jay College, Lehman College, or Queens College. The nucleus of the College is based in a historic Gothic Revival brownstone on the upper west side of Manhattan. Students may take classes at any of the participating colleges.1

In the Fall of their second year, students at all campuses take seminar 2, The People of New York. In this seminar, students use tools from the social sciences, from oral history to mapping and participant observation and beyond, to investigate how the diverse people of New York City shape its identity, past, present, and future. Extensive reading and writing assignments are enriched by visits to neighborhoods, museums and historical and cultural sites across the city. Usually working in groups, students in this class each complete a final public-facing project as their culminating work.

The Food Atlas of New York is a collaborative public-facing project for students in The People of New York to share their research with their fellow students and with the world. If you’re reading this, welcome to our website! We hope that you’ll find the materials here interesting.
