I wanted my mask to include a lot of different textures, materials and colors. I would say I’m a very colorful person with many different sides of me. I used beads for the star eye. I chose to make the eye this way to pay homage to 70s rock which I grew up listening to. I also love to make beaded jewelry so it also represents that crafty side of me. A big part of my identity is music so i had to include a guitar and a piano, the two instruments i play.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project made me reflect on who I am, what makes me me, and made me think about how to represent that using different materials. After visiting various NYC museums I’ve come to learn that art can be anything you want it to be, for your own sake, and so I decided to explore that using materials I’ve grown up using for various art projects and endeavors.
