This zine focuses on the artist René Magritte and some of his artwork. The main goal of the zine is to introduce people to his life, ideas and artwork as a Surrealist artist. The zine format allows the artwork and my text to complement each other in a manner similar to Magritte’s mixed use of words and images. I specifically focused on The Treachery of Images and The Son of Man through which readers can get an understanding of how to approach Magritte’s artwork.

Magritte’s paintings are often saturated with multiple layers of meaning. Even paintings that appear simple, such as a pipe on a plain, uniform background, are intended to challenge the viewers’ ideas about truth and reality. As a surrealist, Magritte was not bound by a need to conform his work to the reality of the world around him. This freedom allowed Magritte to create art that was truly innovative not only in its style, but in the messages, thoughts, and ideas it conveys to the viewers.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Magritte’s artwork, as well as the surrealist movement, is about looking at the world in a deeper and more nuanced way. Surrealism challenges the viewer to think about reality as a façade. In simplistic terms, do not always believe what you see. This idea mirrors NYC. There are deeper levels behind the façade of the world’s greatest city image that is presented. It is one city, but in fact, if you look deeper, it is a collection of people and cultures. There are stunningly pristine and beautiful parts of the city that mask problems below the surface. On the other hand, there are more impoverished and seemingly gloomy parts of the city that just under the surface reveal vibrant and flourishing cultures. The message of Magritte’s art is to look beyond the plain reality, an important lesson for all New Yorkers.
