How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing my project helped me see how art is inextricably connected into everyday life in New York. By turning my own memories, neighborhoods, and interests into visual symbols, I realized that New Yorkers constantly use art to claim space, preserve identity, and process change. The map of Brooklyn, the buildings, and the flag echoed how communities mark belonging in a city that’s always shifting. The mix of nature, history, math, and technology showed me how diverse interests can coexist in one person, just like different cultures and artistic traditions coexist across NYC's various communities.
