At some point in our lives, we have all seen artworks that depict the artist themselves. These artworks are called self-portraits. A self-portrait is not only a painting or drawing of how the artist looks, but also reveals the inner feelings that the artist feels as themselves. For example, we understand the artist’s views, opinions, or thoughts on various topics, whether political or personal. We also appreciate how the artists viewed themselves. Some artists depict themselves as confident, independent figures who fearlessly look into the eyes of their viewers.
In contrast, other artists bare themselves and show their vulnerable side as well as their sufferings and their hardships. To put it in more general terms, when these artists paint their portraits, they are exploring their self-identity and understanding that one person’s self-identity is complex and multifaceted. This is particularly noticeable when artists depict themself as multiple personas, encouraging us also to inquire and explore the various sides of ourselves that reside within us.
Our museum is divided into several sections, with one section exploring the emotions of different artists throughout the centuries. Each self-portrait in this section reflects a specific emotion, allowing viewers to understand what the artist is trying to communicate regarding their inner struggles or happiness. The section opposite these titled “Artist’s Gaze” shows us a series of portraits where the artists directly look in the direction of the viewers with confident, bold eyes. The artworks that are part of the central room are titled “Women Empowerment,” filled with self-portraits of women throughout the years. Then there is a section completely dedicated to Frida Kahlo, the icon and epitome of artworks, including self-portraits. The last section of our museum, titled “Artists at work,” is artworks where the artists paint themselves with an easel or painting or do some sort of creative work. All these artworks come together to provide us with a comprehensive picture of the exploration of self-identity and a deeper understanding of how these artists express themselves.
Throughout our time in Arts in the City we have learned about a variety of forms of art and their impact on New York, as well as New York’s impact on them. This project allowed us to explore themes that have been prominent in art throughout history in several different mediums. Art allows the artist to express oneself and it also allows the audience to interpret and learn from it in their own way, unique to their own experience. By looking at self portraits and their evolution, we were able to see the effects of society and social norms on one’s self identity as well as how it is reflected in art.
