While working on this mask, I was able to reflect on the things that I really like and are important to me. I decided to paint the base of my mask pink as it is my favorite color. Then I added the tree to show my background and how I am American, but my roots are Italian. Next, I added a cross that represents my faith, along with the verse “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

I also added my interests, such as computers, dance, and math. The computer represents my major and how I like to code. I included math and numbers because, ever since I was little, they’ve always come to me and just made sense. I then added music notes because I really enjoy listening to music. Then I said a dancer because dance has always been a part of my life.

Lastly, to finish off my mask, I added words that are important to me and other things I enjoy. Some words I said that are important to me are my family, friends, strength, and belief.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

By completing my project, I was able to explore the different roles art plays in my life and in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities. When deciding what to include on my mask, I chose elements that represent who I am, and I realized many of them are forms of art, such as the music I listen to and the shows I watch. This project helped me realize that art also plays a similar role in the community by giving people a way to share their stories, celebrate cultures, express themselves, and strengthen their community identity.
