My project is centered on the issues of gun violence. It has been a recurring issue in the Bronx, especially. I have seen the effects of it on a community, loved ones, and myself. It is important to me to speak on such a subject that has been broadcast all over, yet it doesn’t seem like much is being done. My piece is supposed to be interactive with the audience to promote storytelling, but also bring more awareness to the issue. The installation will contain two white lawn chairs and a domino table. The purpose is supposed to make the person feel as if they are placed into the community. Around the neighborhood, you’ll typically see people sitting together playing numerous games, and dominoes is one of them. One chair is where the person will listen to a piece of spoken word and speeches from rallies, speaking up about the topic. This will serve as the storytelling portion of the project, but also make people feel like they’re not alone if they have been affected. The domino table would be a place where the listener can write a name to put on the second empty chair. That chair serves as an altar to honor the lives lost due to gun violence. The whole experience is to hear stories and be taught about the issue while being placed as one in the community to truly understand the emotional aspect of it. I want people to understand the topic and know their help matters. I would also hope that people find the inspiration to be involved in the solution on topics that they hold close to their hearts.
Completing this project showed me how many people turn to varies forms of art to tell a story and be seen. Many people do speak up towards issues, and even try and act upon it, however, it becomes difficult when people don't pay as much attentiom to it as intended. We truly treat the community as a family and it is beautiful to see that even with tragic situations, we still find a way to bond and help each other.
