We researched fashion expression in NYC by interviewing New Yorkers about their choice of appearance. We also took a photo of their outfits, with their consent, to provide a visual representation of the volunteer’s fashion.
Volunteers provided:
(1) what they are wearing and to explain their appearance.
(2) how it makes them feel
(3) how they believe their appearance impacts their everyday life.
This was presented through a slideshow with their testimonies and their photo. Attendees were allowed to sort through the slides as we explained our findings. We connected this to mental health and personal expression. In the end, we established a connection between external presentations and internal thoughts. People were found to have better interactions and moods when fully expressing themselves through fashion. They use fashion to illustrate their culture and values.
Completing this project made me feel more connected to the people around me, friends, family, and other New Yorkers alike. New York is best known for it's importance in the fashion and broadway world, but everyday fashion is not something that is appreciated often. By finishing and immersing myself in this project, I found that "normal" fashion is one of the most important ways to express ourselves. It speaks a thousand words for us before we even speak, and grants people another layer of expression to connect with who they are on the inside.
