Our project centers around the book The Colossus of New York by Colson Whitehead, specifically drawing from his essay on the subway in its relation to the people of New York City. Through this lens and the expression of postcards, we examined the subway and its status in the world of art in NYC, from parallels to Greek Art to the more contemporary Graffiti movement and how they give color and identity to the city around us.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

It helped me explore the youth artists of NYC and the backgrounds that defined their art, their expression, along with their lives. To understand where one comes from helps give context to the way one acts and thinks. The subway and art provides an avenue for all of those to be seen.
