Northern Food and Grocery is a fairly new addition to the neighborhood in comparison to Pizza Sam’s two doors down, which was established in 1967. Once known as “El Caballo” and “Arabelly’s Grocery” , this corner store has displayed images of hot food and advertised sandwiches from the outside yet hasn’t actually offered it for about 2-3 years now. Nonetheless, movement in and out is still seen as local elders stride in to buy their dollar lottery scratch tickets and boss revolution phone cards to phone their loved ones back home. The corner store also offers bongs and other smoking devices, staying open late into the night
Jackson Heights is a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, with a strong Colombian presence, so it’s no surprise Northern Food and Grocery has collaborated with its Colombian residents for its addition of hot food. It had done so in the past as well, being the kitchen for Paisa Burger which has made its way down Northern Boulevard. There are two workers who cook up arepas and typical breakfast sandwiches right at the entrance of the store. This new development hopes to attract more customers as on the other corner of the block is another food and grocery store that has been long standing.
Because of its late hours, this store offers convenience to residents of the area as they carry Mexican snacks like mantecadas (a buttery-bread snack) and various chips for the classic 2/$1 deal as well as cleaning products. At 11pm, its LED lights still shine brightly battling across the corner from the 24/7 laundromat.
At the intersection of the Q66 and Q49 buses in Jackson Heights, Northern Food and Grocery offers morning coffee, an array of late-night snacks, and just about anything you’ll need.
