New York City is a melting pot of people from varying cultures, and it is important to recognize the impact that Caribbean people have on our city through parades, paintings/photography, food, and music. In every borough of New York there are communities providing a slice of their unique culture from places like the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago. Shedding light on the ways that Caribbean people use various art mediums to celebrate their liberation and express themselves in New York are a testament to how far they have come.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Exploring Arts in New York City helped us to learn about Caribbean culture and how they use creative expression to tell stories through passionate music, traditional clothing, delicious food, and complex artistry. When many Caribbean immigrants came to New York it was a culture shock, but they found a way to feel at home and now they share their culture with others. We see their influence in our daily life through the food we eat, the flags on street poles, the music we hear on transit, and the restaurants we pass by. Their influence is ever present around us and we have a newfound appreciation for how they have shaped New York.
