My project explores the evolution of hip-hop fashion in New York City and how it has served as a powerful form of empowerment. I was inspired by the way clothing in hip-hop looked and wondered about the history and passion behind it. Also being from the Bronx , hip-hop touches home for me because this was a culture that was made out of struggles that the borough went through and something we are proud about. My goal was to show that style in hip-hop is never just about looking good, but it is a response to inequality, gives a sense of cultural pride, and a creative tool for representation. I focused on key influences across decades, from early streetwear to the work of designers like Dapper Dan; artists like Run-DMC and Nicki Minaj, who used fashion to reshape the culture and expanded self-expression.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Completing this project helped me see how art has played a vital role in the lives of New Yorkers. It has allowed people to tell their stories in many different ways. Through hip-hop fashion, I learned how it was a survival tool. Help people to express pride in places that have been overlooked by the government. I also realized how clothing connects generations, honors many local histories, and turns neighborhoods into spaces of artistic expression. Lastly, it has allowed to understand and appreciate NYC more.
