My project is just about embracing the beauty within everything. My collages are made from random pages of magazines and turned into something beautiful. My first collage (the vertical one with the horse) was made as an in-class assignment. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to make another one for my final.
My first collage was meant to represent rebirth. The imagery with the dying horse blossoming from its grave in an otherworldly abstract realm. I tried to convey a spiritual emotion from the colors filling up a night sky/space.
My second collage (the horizontal one) was more based on aesthetics and vibes. I really just tried to go with whatever came to mind for this one. I tried to make it pop in color, as I personally enjoy colorful aesthetics, and tried to have some similar themes of growth that my first one did. Ultimately, though, I worked on making it as beautiful as I could while being random at the same time.
Completing my project helped me explore the role of the arts in the lives of New Yorkers, as I began to become more aware of art as a unifying force. I always knew art could bring groups of people together. NYC has been a place of diversity and cultural exchange, not only through communication but art. While making these collages, I felt all my creativity pouring into them, and felt proud of it. Showing it to my peers and seeing their own collages allowed so much room for conversation and understanding.
