We wanted to see how social, political and economic issues impact art specifically in NYC. Our idea was to each pick a decade and inspect the issues at hand and then see what art forms came out of it.
Researching this was very interesting; each decade within America had very distinct forms of art, often connecting back to the issues at hand.
Then, we each chose an artist, looked at their art, and made a collage on the decade as a whole.
How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?
Completing our project showed us how social, political and economic issues deeply impact art as a whole, and how art is transformative and effective in raising awareness for these issues.
