Group Members: Jacqueline Cohen and Alicia Cohen

The task was to gather information on a neighborhood of choice and to examine the environment and creating an image data base. Our group created a brochure about a specific street, Avenue U between east 3rd and 4th in Gravesend, Brooklyn, New York. In our brochure we displayed how this neighborhood really has it all. From grocery stores to hair salons to even a doctor’s office, this street takes convenience and community to a new level. We also tied it back to the history of Gravesend as a place founded on religious freedom. In our brochures there are pictures, interviews with pedestrians, a deep dive into the various stores on the block, and a historical background of Gravesend. We hope people that view this brochure understand the level of community and culture in New York, and how unique and special that is in the world we live in.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

Through completing our project we learned that arts are a big part of New Yorkers lives. New York is filled with culture and community, and that's what makes it so special. Through exploring the Gravesend neighborhood we got to see the power of community and culture first hand. We also learned how the history of this neighborhood is responsible for the amazing developments there are today.
