“Trains Through Time” explores how New York City’s subway system evolved from its earliest tracks to today’s modern lines, revealing how each era of transit reflects the city’s evolution, growth, and culture. By comparing old and new subways, through their architecture, their efficiency, their technology, and their impact on communities, this project demonstrates how trains symbolize steady history and progress. Understanding the past and how NYC is built to sustain subways as the most prevalent form of transportation is crucial. Therefore, preserving that aspect of the past and embracing innovation is a wonderful thing. We want to show you the beauty of subways as they shape the city and reflect the people who use them.

How did completing your project help you explore the role of arts in the lives of New Yorkers and their communities?

This project made it evident that trains are a form of art themselves. They make shared spaces more accessible and feel more welcoming. It showed that art isn't always something you have to seek out in a museum; it can be something that makes your commute to and fro easy and something that connects you to the city that you live in. It's one of the largest shared public art spaces in the city, and sometimes we take it for granted! Our trains and subways are testaments to how intelligent and creative humans are.
